We Need Your Help To Clean Up!

Last night I walked around the south side of Clair Hills posting Spring Clean Up signs to our mailboxes. It’s something we (the CHCA) do regularly to promote events and make sure people know about our association and what we provide.

On my walk I noticed an incredible amount of garbage in our streets, ravines and green spaces. Even in the dark, I could see the plastic waste, surely blown around from recycling bins on the ever-windy Wednesdays (why does it always get super windy on garbage day?). Some surprising items included a full sized garbage bin in a ravine along Keats Way as well as a stack of what is probably easily 100 newspapers or flyers. Anyone missing a garbage bin or forget to do their paper route?

I must admit, it seems unfair to have to pick up what we probably all consider someone else’s garbage. However, I’m certain that at some point something has escaped from our recycling bin unbeknownst to us on one of those typical windy Wednesdays. So if we all treat the waste around our neighbourhood as ours, then I hope together we can all help pick it up.

Our neighbourhood just doesn’t need a clean up, it needs a REALLY good clean up, because having been around the block more than once (pun totally intended!), I can tell you that there is way more garbage in our ‘hood than years past. There is nothing I can say more clearly than this: WE NEED YOUR HELP!

Our annual Spring Clean Up is run in conjunction with the Tim Horton’s Community Clean Up and City of Waterloo. We do ours a little later in the season because we find the weather is always nicer (well, usually). This year we’re hosting it on Saturday May 2nd at 10:00am in two locations: the corner of Lucerne Ave and Columbia Street West, and the entrance to St. Moritz Park on Brandenburg Blvd. Volunteers from the CHCA will be on hand to give you free supplies to help safely pick up garbage and guide you to the areas that need the most attention. We’ll also have free hot chocolate and coffee, and some treats, while supplies last. We also have some prizes too! We’ll start teasing those on social media, so be sure to follow us @ClairHills, join us on Facebook and connect with us on BBM Channels C00410314 to learn what you could win.

So come on out, pick up some garbage for as much time as you can spare. And consider bringing a donation for the FoodBank – we always collect for this worthy cause at our events. Please RSVP here so we can plan accordingly.

See you on May 2!
