Pack fire safety into your holiday weekend plans

Posted on behalf of the Waterloo Fire Rescue

(Waterloo, Ont. – May 15, 2013) To minimize the risk of fire and burn injuries, Waterloo Fire Rescue is urging residents to include fire safety in their Victoria Day weekend plans.

“Fire safety is not just for homes, it’s for cottages, cabins and seasonal homes too,” said public education officer John Percy. “This weekend, consider purchasing new smoke alarms and batteries for the cottage in case they need replacing, and check heating appliances and chimneys before using them.”

This holiday weekend is often the first for people to open up their cottages. Waterloo Fire Rescue recommends the following fire safety tips:

  • Install smoke alarms on every storey and outside all sleeping areas of your cottage, cabin or seasonal home. It’s the law in Ontario.
  • Test smoke alarms to ensure they work. Pack a new smoke alarm and extra batteries for the cottage.
  • Make sure you and your family have a home fire-escape plan. You must have two ways out in case of a fire.
  • Clean heating appliances and barbecues before using them. Please remember to apply a 50/50 solution of water and dish soap to all fuel and hose connections on your barbecue before using it for the first time this year.
  • Make sure that all combustibles, as well as children and pets, are kept well away from barbecues when they are in use. Check with the local fire department, municipality or Ministry of Natural Resources

Spring Clean Up and St. Moritz Park Public Consultation are just around the corner

The Clair Hills Community Association is proud to host two events this month, and they are fast approaching.

The annual Spring Clean Up is this Saturday April 20th at 10:00am and 2:00pm, and is a great way to meet some of your neighbours, members of the CHCA and of course, help beautify Clair Hills by picking up all the litter that’s been hidden under the snow. The St. Moritz Park Public Consultation is being hosted on Tuesday April 23rd at the Clair Hills Retirement Community Activity Room at 7:00pm. The Clair Hills Community Association, along with the City of Waterloo and our Ward 2 Councillor, Karen Scian, will host a workshop-style brainstorming session to determine what types of amenities residents would like to have in St. Moritz park. City of Waterloo staff will be on hand to put a price tag on the items attendees suggest, and providing alternative ideas/solutions that might be more cost-effective. Some ideas include a leash-free zone for dogs, a tennis court, skating rink, among others. Make sure you RSVP! For more information, click here.

We are looking forward to seeing you twice in one week!

Freezing rain warning & flood warning–Waterloo Fire Rescue urges residents to have a 72 hour emergency preparedness kit

Posted on behalf of Waterloo Fire Rescue

(Waterloo, Ont. – April 11, 2013) With the current freezing rain Waterloo Fire Rescue is urging residents to be cautious when driving, walking near waterways and to have a 72 hour emergency preparedness kit ready.

Environment Canada has issued a freezing rain warning with a potential for a major ice storm tonight. The main precipitation is expected to arrive this evening will possible freezing rain and ice pellets.

The Grand River Conservation Authority has issued flood warnings due to today’s heavy rain fall.

Freezing rain and ice pellets will increase the risk of widespread power outages this evening from downed power lines due to significant ice accumulation and high winds.

Slippery and unstable stream banks and cold temperatures can lead to very hazardous conditions, making driving or walking on sidewalks very slippery.

You and your family should always be prepared for extreme weather conditions by having a 72 hour emergency kit. For more information on safety kits, please visit the Public Safety Canada website at www.getprepared.gc.ca.

Waterloo Fire Rescue and the Grand River Conservation Authority are monitoring the weather situation and will provide updates if necessary.

For updated weather summaries please visit the Environment Canada website www.weatheroffice.gc.ca or follow local media outlets.

St. Moritz Park Public Consultation RSVP

The CHCA executive and volunteers continue our work with the City of Waterloo and Ward 2 Councillor, Karen Scian, on the next phase of the St Moritz Park. For those of you following the progress, we finished the fall with a final grading including seeding of the soccer area and planting/landscaping of the edges of the park. The paths throughout the park were constructed and asphalt laid down making great areas for walking, running, roller blading and long boarding. Winter season included many Clair Hills residents enjoying our latest park addition with X-country skiing, tobogganing, dog walking, etc.

Our last step is a public consultation meeting to confirm the feedback from our online survey done last year, as well as hosting a final input session for you, the residents of Clair Hills. The meeting will be held at the Clair Hills Retirement Community on Tuesday April 23rd at 7:00pm. Please RSVP here if you wish to attend. We look forward to your attendance and feedback!

More information will be coming soon, so stay tuned and if you’re not on our email list, sign-up here.

Last year, residents collected over thirty bags of garbage as well as dangerous debris including wire fencing and a discarded trampoline! We need your help again to collect all the recycling and garbage that has been buried underneath the snow and strewn about by those windy Wednesdays. If you’re unable to participate on the 20th, why not simply take a half hour to walk around your street and pick up any debris.

Everyone can do their part to help keep Clair Hills beautiful.

Learn how you can protect our trees, parks and natural areas

    City Trees

The City of Waterloo maintains over 30,000 trees on public streets as well as all the trees in parks.  And every year, staff plant and mulch 300-500 additional trees within the City.

During dry spells, newly planted trees are susceptible to drying out even with the protective mulch barrier.  Although the City has recently initiated a watering bag program, there are still many more trees that could use a helping hand during the summer months.  A couple of cans of water (20 gallons) twice a week during dry conditions is very inexpensive (less than 4 dollars for 2 months) and will go a long way in helping Waterloo’s trees grow.

All trees on public property are protected under our Tree By-law.  This means that no one is to cut, damage, remove, or attach anything to a public tree.  If you have a concern about a tree, please call, and an arborist will be there to address your concern.

Please stay on the official trails that were designed for the area and do not create additional trails from your rear yard or to other locations within the natural area.

Please stay on the official trails that were designed for the area and do not create additional trails from your rear yard or to other locations within the natural area.

Trails through natural areas are designed to allow residents to enjoy the natural feature while minimizing disturbance to the feature.

Trails through natural areas are designed to allow residents to enjoy the natural feature while minimizing disturbance to the feature.

    Parks and Natural Areas

Living near a park or natural area is both a  pleasure and a privilege, and with it comes responsibility. In order for all residents to enjoy the area equally, here are some things to consider:

    Children

Please help to encourage children to respect and care for their park by asking them to stay on the trails, observe wildlife and their homes from a distance, and be careful not to damage the native vegetation and trees.

    Encroachments

When encroachments (using public land as an extention of ones own property) or illegal access (accessing parkland with equipment without proper permits) occur, it affects neighbors, communities, maintenance operations, tax payers, and the ecology and wildlife that depend on natural processes to continue.

Encroachment and illegal access negatively impacts natural areas by smothering native vegetation, introduces non-native species, compacts soils, causes erosion, causes potential for fire, and is extremely unsightly.

Encroachments include placing soil, garbage, yard waste, grass clippings, furniture, sheds, fences, play equipment, gardens, composters, vehicles, bird feeders, etc onto any public land.  An encroachment also includes altering public land by mowing, pruning, or removing vegetation or soils, building bike jumps or controlled vehicle tracks.

    Trails within Natural Areas

Trails through natural areas are designed to allow residents to enjoy the natural feature while minimizing disturbance to the feature.  When footpaths are created by residents beyond the City’s official trail system, vegetation becomes trampled, erosion occurs, trees become stressed and invasive plants-such as garlic mustard use the condition created to become established in these disturbed soils.

Please stay on the official trails that were designed for the area and do not create additional trails from your rear yard or to other locations within the natural area.

    Wildlife

Observe wildlife from a distance in order to avoid unnecessary confrontations while respecting the wildlife and it’s habitat.  And, please be respectful of the inhabitants of the your park and do not destroy their burrows, nests or other habitat.

Pools, Hot Tubs, and Rear Yard Drainage

Pool, hot tub, and rear yard drainage is generally laiden with chemical &/or the pooling of rear yard drainage can have a negative impact on the surrounding vegetation, especially from salt water systems.

To drain a pool or hot tub, place the drain tube on your lawn away from public park land.  Allow the water to filter into the soils in your yard.

    Dog Feces

Please dispose of dog feces in your green bin (without the plasitc bag).  Using public garbage cans cause unsanitary conditions for staff as well as offensive odors to park users.

The City of Waterloo co-ordinates a program called Partners-in-Parks.  Through this program your neighbourhood may adopt the park which could include, litter clean-ups, and mulching trails.
